Revisiting Winston Churchill once again: R. Albert Mohler on the importance of Churchill and "the moral importance of historical truth"
Do watch the short video by R. Albert Mohler on what he calls is a matter of “the moral importance of historical truth” (at 9:52-55).
It both rightly defends the importance of seeing Winston Churchill as a hero in the global story of the 20th century, but also contains these wise essentials regarding the way we do history:
“We should not be afraid to ask questions of history, we should not be afraid to ask questions about our heroes. … I think the Bible affirms the need for heroes. I think Hebrews chapter 11 makes that very clear. But you know, the Bible is very honest. And we understand our heroes, warts and all, so to speak.” (at 5:07-28)
“The role of an individual in history can be massive.” (at 6:33-35)
“Human beings are indispensable to history.” (at 9:16-18)
Thanks! Though IMO Hebrews 11 is not a list of heroes qua heroes as we like to see them - they're only "heroes" within the context of their service to God - as Paul would say, they're examples of larger spiritual truths, not independent superheroes. But in our culture it is common with people like WSC or Thatcher to define them as good and then defend them accordingly with appreciating and putting their flaws in clear perspective....e.g the Great Man in History.
