Søren Kierkegaard on tyrants and martyrs
“The tyrant dies and his rule is over; the martyr dies and his rule begins.” (Søren Kierkegaard)
Back in the late twentieth century, Francis Schaeffer cavalierly, and wrongfully, dismissed Søren Kierkegaard as a Christian thinker. In fact, despite much good done by L’Abri and Schaeffer, his dismissal of Kierkegaard ironically well captures the anti-intellectual tendencies of Evangelicalism. A student presentaton by Marshall Morden in my course of Christian Apologetics at Heritage Seminary yesterday on Kierkegaard as an spologist, or anti-apologist, reminded me of the Danish thinker’s value for our day.
